The amazing 1970's music

I decided to take a tour of 1980’s music. In the process I found out that it really began in the late 70’s. That surprised me. Some of my favorite songs are not in the 80’s at all. It got me thinking. What about the 90’s? I took a look at the top 100 songs of each year. When I hit the 90’s it really changed from the 80’s style. Duh!
In reality, I hardly know the 90’s. I just don’t care much for that type of music. Oh, they had a type? I know you know, but it’s dang weird each decade has a flavor or style of music. I noticed that the late 80’s changed around 1989. Then I got to thinking again. Did the disco era begin in the 70’s? That period was all about sex and hippies, right? There are angry songs about anti-government. Racial divide. The sexual revolution. Oh, boy was I wrong.
I began by looking at the top 100 songs in 1969. The variety stunned me. We had classical music. Acapella, and a little rock like Led Zeppelin. I realized that there were many variety shows in those days. Guys and girls that hosted talk shows on TV. They also did funny skits and sang. It was the likes of Sonny and Cher. We also had themes to TV shows and movies like rocky and Jaws. It ranged from old time rock and roll to country. All in the top 100.
It was the themes that stunned me. Admittingly, I am just moving through 1976, but the themes are set. Between 1969-1975 we see almost no disco. There are a few soul train songs here and there but nothing really. What is there though is freedom, love, sharing, and family. So many family groups. White and black people playing music together. Different beliefs all talking love. There is no hate, anger, and dissention. I was stunned at how little anti- government music was out there. Nothing on weed and drugs.
Did God dig the 1970’s? There is this idea that God is love. The music of the 70’s reported that. God’s love each other theme is riddled all through this time period in a positive way. People believed in the teachings of Jesus. They tried to live in community. All religions, races, and sex types worked together in music. In a way, the 70’s people tried to do it God’s way. Yet, within that was sexual freedom, drugs, and disco (ha ha). I do believe the good message of God was there.
What you do notice is that into the 80’s and certainly not the 90’s a growing anger. Music became darker. In the 70’s it was the message of freedom and love. In later years I hear anger, frustration, and sexual diversion. Everything is focused on the individual rights. There is no come together right now. Where is the promotion of love and the teachings of Jesus?
By the way, disco really never hit bigtime until 1976. It lasted not even three years. The songs of togetherness and freedom lasted from the 60’s till the late 70’s. Today’s music is individualistic. Yet, I like it. There is no love, community, and God. All we have is our right to be heard. The anger is there. The frustration is there. I always believed that when hippies grew up we would see a love change. oddly enough it’s not there at all. I believe the values those kids were raised with filtered into their hearts. Yet, it was a false movement. People are just not wired to love unconditionally. I think that’s why we have anger today. The message was great but the application went sideways.
The 70’s music told us we can work together. We can love. We can have God too. The generations from the 80’s on did not buy the hippies message. Maybe God was too slow. Maybe something went wrong? It’s weird but the fall of the berlin wall did not bring peace and freedom. Were a mess today. The message of the 70’s has become lost in our individualistic anger towards everything.
I have loved the journey through the 70’s music. The diversity is amazing. The freedom to be as one is cool. The message was great. Almost no sex songs. I am stunned. It was groovy. It makes me boogie. Today, where is the love man.
