We don't care

I am one of the last people in the universe that wants to talk about gossip. I love gossip! Just kidding, really, I had no opinion. Yet, recently, fake news and the no truth era have filtered into our daily lives. Social media loves it. Fake news magazines and websites love it. Now the Politician loves it. Slander is nothing new. I am surprised people don’t use it more. Gossip is gaining new meaning for me.

            I am in Alberta, Canada. An election is coming. Elections are coming across Canada and in America not long from now. I am not sure that gossip is a good topic. Who really cares if we embrace fake news and no truth ideology? What is troubling to me is the accepting part. Why are we accepting no truth? Why is fake news worth posting? I’m not sure I get it. Political candidates always go with the flow. If gay rights are important then it’s top of the platform. If it’s global warming, walls, or the economy they are in. Why is fake news and gossip important to them these days? Being elected.

            This morning a friend posted a spam text he received. It said that one candidate is homophobic and will destroy the economy. What was troubling is that he claimed the party was spamming him. It was a slam against that very party. What bothered him is that the text claimed it was real from the party it was slamming. He believed it and reposted it. Did he care if it was real? No, he cared that he was spammed. In reality, he did not care who sent it, or if it was true. Like a drone he reposted it to the world.

            This election will be won on your phone. Who cares about debt, economy, or policy? Fake news is important now. We blindly repost because were supposed to. I’m not even sure we read them half the time. Our job is to trend. The cool thing is getting likes. The gossip is a distant last in the care meter. What if we were spreading false lies on an upcoming candidate? Does anyone even care?

            What does God have to say? Exodus 23:1 says “Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.” Way back thousands of years ago in the Old Bible? Gossip back then? God does know us so well. I mean really well. Fast forward to today. The current leaders are guilty of ruining the province. Arguably, the Fake Prime Minister of Canada has ruined this whole country too. That depends on who you are. What is real anymore?

            They are running the country. Whatever has transpired is on them. Yet, in the news they are blaming the opposition. They are blaming the past leaders. The gossip is flying. These new leaders claim they are the truth. They support real news. Yet, the texts mysteriously appear. They claim to be sent from the opposition. A report of homophobic tendencies flies. Economic disaster is being avoided unless you vote for them. In the mean time the economy is in the grave. Were dead. Gossip is now a tool to deflect. Is it working? Hell, ya it is. Just repost when told to, by the guilty.

            I fear were lost. A candidate does not even have to visit one house, hospital, or debate. If they have the best social media dude in the world, they just might win. What if twitter reported someone’s popular? What if Facebook told you that someone fights for the little guy. What if social media told you that the opposition is homophobic, dangerous, and not very popular. What if all your friends reposted that. Be honest, who would you vote for?

            The harsh reality is that we are sheep, lemmings, and stupid. People have been reduced to following their phone. There is a very good reason we post fake news. A good reason we love reposting gossip. We don’t care. Most people don’t vote anymore. We just don’t care. We slander a person because the post is funny. Yes, we don’t care. Slander a man even if he is innocent. Absolutely, we don’t care. Patrick, your wrong about me. Really? I just read what you posted. Did you?
