Looking at the Modern Woman

            I was walking the other day and noticed a girl busy working in the garden. Seems normal and I should have paid no attention. There was something wrong with this picture. She was not the picture of Martha Stewart or Peg From an old show called “Leave it to Beaver.” No, she looked much closer to Peg from “Married with children” (gee another old show). Was this Girl the face of the modern woman?

            She was wearing a laced Negligee type of top with ratty cutoff jeans. Her body was covered with tattoo designs apparently from head to toe. The sounds of the old group ABBA was cranked on the front lawn while she meticulously worked on her flower bed. Was she the new Modern woman?

            Did you know that according to Stats Canada Women don’t live healthier than men anymore. Did you know that they have a higher cancer rate and other health issues? I was scouring over these numbers because I was curious. In 1998 in America, there were around 300,000 deaths by heart disease and cancer in women. In 2010 the rate is up to almost 25% (1 in 4 by the way). I wonder if the modern woman is happy with feminism these days. How is it working out?

            What is the modern woman today? Does she like being a mom, a worker, or single? An article in the New York Times said 51% of women live single. I had a 40 year old female friend say that dating after 40 sucks. With 50% of the population single that should not be a problem should it. I have equally heard that many don’t want to care for an over stressed over worked spouse. The view of the modern wife in the 50’s seems repulsive to so many, yet it’s possible she was happier and healthier than women are today.

            What does God have to say about Woman? Well we all know he wanted her to bear children. It’s weird that a maker would want the creation do what it was made for isn’t it? Why are not more cars airplanes? Anyways, judging Gods view on women through a 4000 year old view seems unfair. The underlying view of God in the Bible is good towards women.

The most significant things in the Bible had women as prominent roles: Mary mother of Jesus, Esther, Ruth, and many others. For an anti-woman society that seems weird. God values woman. He just thought they were better served not busting their hump 7 days a week on a construction site having high stress levels, cancer rates, and health issues.

            So where does that leave the modern woman these days? She is unhealthier than ever before. She is free in some parts of the world. The female can work any job, vote, and live on her own and not be looked down upon. The modern woman looks to be in a better place don’t you think? She is now freer than ever to die quicker, live with more pain, and lives lonely more than any other time in history. God said man was not meant to be alone. Why did God make a woman to be-friend him and not another man? I think it is because women are so much more than a workaholic and tough chic. I suppose the girl I saw in the garden was a tough chic because of her tats. I bet though she was enjoying the warm day working on her plants while listening to nice music. In that moment she was a girl and not what society wants her to be.
